About the event

Through most of Jewish and Christian history, God’s people have had a negative view of—or even expressly forbidden—charging interest on a loan.  Merchants were condemned for exploiting the poor, and giving to charity was a way to pay for one’s sins.  That all changed in the early modern period.  We will look at some key biblical and historical texts that shaped this perspective, explore how and why the modern shift occurred, and discuss the implications for ethical profit-making and use of wealth today.

The discussion is intended for adults and teenagers—anyone who can listen and participate is welcome.

Dinner will be provided.  Please respond to the RSVP as soon as possible.  Spaces will be limited.
