What really matters?

Introducing Things that Matter: A Guide to the Christian Faith.

"Today many of us find ourselves discouraged, frustrated, and confused—"distracted from distraction by distraction," in T.S. Eliot’s phrase. Not only do we experience disappointment and failure; even our accomplishments fail to bring lasting happiness.
"What is the meaning of life? How should we live? What can we hope for? We can avoid these questions for a while, but we must finally ask about things that matter."

The first in a series of books that we—the former faculty at Austin Graduate School of Theology—often called the "little books," Things that Matter (TTM) has proven to be an extremely useful tool for helping people understand the Christian faith. Austin Grad sold thousands of copies to churches and individuals through the years. The story behind the book is interesting and helpful in understanding its usefulness in outreach and catechetical instruction.

Things that Matter was originally written by the faculty of Austin Grad in 1991, under the editorial direction of Michael Weed and Jeffrey Peterson, in order to be translated into Russian for Russian readers. The commissioner and driving force behind the book was David Worley, the president of Austin Grad and a man with a deep affection for Russian Christians and seekers. The book was originally published, then, in Russian translation. Since then, it’s been translated into several other languages, including French, Croatian, Serbian, Telegu, Hindi, Greek, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Nepalese (among others). The first English (American) edition was published in 1996.

Things that Matter provides an introduction to the heart of what Christianity teaches about God, life, meaning, the church and its place in God’s work, and the transformative power of the gospel as it works in the Christian life.

At six inches by four inches, and with bulk pricing available, TTM is made for giving away to those who seek to understand what Christians really believe. It’s also a great resource for longtime Christians who desire to deepen their understanding and to "be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have" (1 Pet 3:15). Many churches report having placed copies of TTM in their foyers and/or in welcome packages for visitors and new members to take, read, and pass on to others. We believe you and your church will be blessed by this little book as you ask about "things that matter."
