Jesus' Favorite Book

Do you know what Jesus’ favorite book was?  A good case can be made that it was the Book of Psalms, the book he seems to quote from most often.  On that criterion, Psalms was also the favorite book of first-century Christians, for it is the book most frequently quoted in the New Testament as a whole.  The prayer book of Israel, Jesus, and the early church should probably be high on our list, too.

To help Christians better understand, appreciate, and appropriate Jesus’ favorite book, the Center for Christian Studies has chosen Psalms to be our first complete video series on a biblical book.  John Mark Hicks, retired professor of theology and prolific author, has written and presented 13 full episodes in our newest video learning module, “Psalms: Meditating on the Way.”  Through these episodes, Hicks masterfully surveys the range of Psalms, taking viewers through the psalms of orientation, disorientation, and new orientation, offering practical applications along the way, as well as tips for meaningful ways to read and pray these psalms today.

We are also pleased to partner with Mark Shipp’s Timeless Psalter project.  The video series Introduction and all 13 episodes feature examples from this collection of original songs designed for a cappella singing.  We are grateful for the composers’ cooperation and permission.  These songs come from the following three volumes, and they may be heard and purchased at https://timelesspsalter.com/.

Timeless, vol. 1: In the Day of Distress, Psalms 1–41. Abilene: Abilene Christian University Press, 2011.

Timeless, vol. 2: God Enthroned Forever, Psalms 42–89. Abilene: Abilene Christian University Press, 2016.

Timeless, vol. 3: Sing to God a New Song, Psalms 90–150. Abilene: Abilene Christian University Press, 2023.

Because of the central importance of Psalms to Scripture, Christian theology, and worship, it is worth our close attention today.  This video series is the best way to introduce your congregation to this foundational book.  It is excellent for use in Bible classes, small group studies, as well as for families or individuals who want reliable guidance through Psalms.

Like all our video series, “Psalms: Meditating on the Way” comes with a discussion guide with questions and suggestions and links for further reading and study.

Equip your church with video series that are informative, reliable, substantive, inspirational, and engaging.  See our other video series, view samples on our YouTube page, and get your congregation signed up for a free trial and access to all our premium video content.  A premium subscription, based on the size of the congregation, licenses all the church’s members to access the entire video collection, 24/7.  Single courses may also be purchased.
