New Video Course: Living Jesus: The Sermon on the Mount

In the introduction to his treatise on the Sermon on the Mount, Augustine wrote:

“If anyone will piously and soberly consider the sermon which our Lord Jesus Christ spoke on the mount, as we read it in the Gospel according to Matthew, I think that he will find in it, so far as regards the highest morals, a perfect standard of the Christian life: and this we do not rashly venture to promise, but gather it from the very words of the Lord himself. For the sermon itself is brought to a close in such a way, that it is clear there are in it all the precepts which go to mold the life.”

In the recent Journal of Christian Studies issue on the Sermon on the Mount, many article contributors wrestled in various ways with the question of how Jesus’ Sermon ought to apply to us.  Is its ethic of perfection an unreachable standard, impossible actually to fulfill, simply meant to show us how imperfect we are and therefore dependent on grace alone?  Are these instructions intended for super-Christians only?  Or does Jesus really intend for all his disciples to live out these hard teachings?

Randy Harris, retired teacher from Abilene Christian University, thinks that the Sermon is indeed meant for believers now, and its ethical instruction ought to be pursued.  Harris, who spent many years teaching the Sermon on the Mount, shares some of his best insights in the video series, “Living Jesus: How the Greatest Sermon Ever Will Change Your Life for Good.”  In these 12 episodes, Harris unpacks Matthew 5-7 “in hard-hitting, easy-to-understand, and practical ways.”

Thanks to our partnership with Abilene Christian University Press and Jason Fikes, this video series is now available in the Center for Christian Studies streaming video collection.  Like all our video courses, this series on the Sermon on the Mount comes with discussion questions, making it ideal for use in Bible classes, small group studies, or for individual and family devotional.

The video series is based on the book, Living Jesus: Doing What Jesus Says in the Sermon on the Mount (Abilene: Leafwood, 2012).  “The Sermon on the Mount is more than great ideas by a great teacher. It is a way of life. Randy Harris invites you not just to understand these great teachings but to live them in ways you never before imagined.”

We are pleased to add to our video course catalog this video learning module on the Sermon on the Mount, available through our premium subscription and single course subscription..  We are confident that it will be a blessing to all who seek to understand, put into practice, and proclaim the Sermon’s truths.
