This coming week, the Center for Christian Studies will be heading to Searcy, Arkansas, for the Harding Inspire Lectureship. The theme this year is “Oneness: An Ancient Vision for Ageless Unity.”
I am one of three speakers in a three-part series called, “The Future of Churches of Christ: Proposals for Doctrinal Unity.” The sessions are at 1:00 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (Sept. 29–Oct. 1). On each day, there will be a primary speaker and the other two will respond before we open up to questions. During Monday’s session, I will be the main speaker; on Tuesday, Scott Adair will speak; and on Wednesday, Rubel Shelly.
As heirs of the American Restoration Movement, does the pursuit of Christian unity still animate us? Is it time to revive the rallying cry of our founders? Or is it time to revise it? Each of us is committed to the pursuit of Christian oneness, but each of us raises questions about the “unity plea” we inherited from our forebears. During these sessions, we discuss more effective and responsible ways to pursue Christian unity. These sessions dovetail really well with the recent May issue of the Journal of Christian Studies on Restorationism, Sectarianism, and Ecumenism.
Also, if you are going to be at the Harding Inspire Lectureship, stop by the CCS table in the Bible building rotunda and say hello. At the table, we will be distributing a free copy of the Journal of Christian Studies to every Inspire registrant, so come by and ask for that. You can purchase books (with no shipping charge!), including our new book, A Voice in the Wilderness, and we will be running discounts on back issues of the Journal of Christian Studies and a deal for new subscribers, as well as showing excerpts from our video library. Let’s talk about how CCS can come alongside your congregation to help equip teachers and church members with instruction and resources.
